London police release names of men charged in ‘john sting’ in first case since policy decision (Global News)

London police have released the names of four men charged in a sex-purchasing investigation.

It’s the first time officers have done so since announcing a policy decision more than a month ago to publicly release the names of accused individuals in sex-purchasing cases when it’s legally possible to do so.

Officers say they ran a “john sting” at a London hotel on Wednesday night.

During the operation led by the service’s Human Trafficking Unit, police say they arrested four male suspects who allegedly communicated with an undercover police officer to obtain sexual services.

As a result of the investigation, London police say the following individuals have been charged with communication for the purpose of obtaining sexual services in connection with the case:

Police say the accused were released from custody and are scheduled to appear in court on future dates to answer to the charges.

The decision to name suspects in sex-buying cases was announced at February’s meeting of the London Police Services Board.

“We’ve made a decision to commence a practice on a go-forward basis that where we’re legally able to do so, we will be releasing the names of those individuals that are charged with purchasing sex,” said Chief John Pare at the meeting.

“This is not a choice that you should be doing in purchasing sex and putting these victims at the risk they are facing. We’re trying to use all the tools available to us to combat human trafficking and this is just another step in that direction.”

London is considered a hub for human trafficking. Det. David Ellyatt, the head of the London Police Service’s Human Trafficking Unit, said at the time, that’s due in part to the fact that the city is an “island between major centres” like Detroit and Toronto.

He added that Highway 401 serves as a major route for traffickers to move around women and girls, and that there is a large number of hotels near the highway and on the east side of the city.

Reaction to the policy decision was mixed.

SafeSpace London objected to a lack of consultation by police in making the decision, saying officials should have given the organization notice in order to address safety concerns.

The group released an open letter in which it argued that if London police were “sincere in wanting to utilize all the tools available to them to identify and respond to sex trafficking in our community, they would speak with members of SafeSpace London — the only peer-driven, sex worker organization in our city.”

However, executive director of the London Abused Women’s Centre expressed support for the decision, saying it would help drive down demand and is consistent with the protocol for other crimes.

I wonder what would happen if some rich guy fought his case and won, then decided to sue the city for false arrest, harassment and personal damages.

In Canada, the courts have always given the police a wide berth in making an arrest on reasonable grounds. One would have a very difficult time showing the police acted outside their scope or authority in arresting someone showing up at their john sting operation, even if that person was subsequently acquitted of the accused crime.

For example, you could have a legal reason to be in a local business, and not be aware that the back room was a child sex trafficking operation. The police could raid that business while you are in there and arrest everybody on scene. As they parade everyone out to the police vehicles, you are videotaped and repeatedly shown on the news. Of course, no one ever hears later that after the police sorted it all out, you weren't charged, but the damage is done, people saw you being taken out in handcuffs from this horrible place. Odds are very long that you would ever be able to successfully sue for damages in that. You would be very lucky if the police even made a public statement clarifying the situation.

2 groups that advocate for sex workers have met with Susan Toth, who is vice chair of the police services board. They are asking that the decision to name sex buyers be reconsidered.

London is the new Salem, and "johns" are the new witches.
An entire task force dedicated to men with an erection. Next it will be illegal to dance in London cause dancing is the sign of the devil.

How very sad when true injustice is forced on those who aren't able to speak out, less they be burned at the stake of the "moralists".
Imagine what could be done if all that effort went into those truly inflicting harm on the innocent. Maybe there wouldn't be so many drug addicts dying from Fentanyl.

Megan is complaining about Susan Toth and Javeed Sukhera, of the police services board, meeting with sex worker advocates who are concerned about the policy to publicly name those who are accused of buying sex. The board's lawyer says the 2 board members did nothing wrong. Megan does not accept this. I guess she does not any opinion heard, which she disagrees with.

This made me laugh:
Quote:
But in February, police Chief John Pare announced that London police were taking the unique step of changing policy and would now release the names of people arrested for buying sex.
He says the new policy is focusing on helping victims of human trafficking, not those sex workers who freely choose to work in the sex trade.
I say BULLSHIT.
These "johns" ARE the customers of sex workers who freely choose to work in the sex trade which means you are attacking their ability to earn a living.
If these guys come across sex workers who appear to be under duress as victims of human trafficking, there is a better chance of it being reported!
It's like arresting guys walking into a strip club because some of the strippers may be forced into stripping by abusive boyfriends.
Wouldn't it make more sense to just pose as clients and visit every girl who advertises? You don't go after drug dealers by posing as a drug dealer, you go after them posing as someone looking to buy drugs.

Drug dealers are breaking the law, sex workers aren't. Sure, it sounds nice to say, go see the sex worker, interview her, see if she's trafficked. How many who are trafficked are going to say they are? Because she isn't committing a crime, the police have no leverage to lean on her, get her to give up the bigger fish, the way you work a drug dealer for his supplier. And Megan's position is, no woman is doing this willfully, so it doesn't matter to her which guys get nabbed. We are all slime. Having x number of otherwise decent guys getting busted seeing a so-called willing sex worker still provides her with the stats she needs to justify her continued government funding.
